The Cabildo in New Orleans that we see today was built between 1795-1799 by Spanish rule. Following the great fire 1788 that completely destroyed the previous building that stood in its place. Cabildo is a Spanish word for municipal court. The Cabildo in New Orleans is a Spanish Baroque architecture building. Seeing that it was a place where all municipal affairs took place. The Cabildo served as the New Orleans municipal council until the mid-1850s. Because of that, it was where the Louisiana purchase took place in 1803. Which at the time doubled the size of the nation.

Afterward, between 1868-1910 it served as the seat of the Louisiana supreme court. Since it was such a beautiful historic building. It was transferred to the Louisiana State Museum in 1908. Then in 1988 the building burned in a huge fire and had to be closed down for renovations until 1994. During which it was restored with 600-year-old French timber framing techniques. Later in 2005, the Cabildo in New Orleans survived Hurricane Katrina. A few days after the hurricane the Cabildo was used by police officers/agencies from New Mexico and New York as a base to patrol the city. Overall, the Cabildo has so much history
