A love story gone wrong

Zach and Addie had a typical love story. Both were working as bartenders in the French Quarter when they met. Addie was wild, free spirited and had a reputation as an abusif drunk which didn’t stop her from drinking. After Katrina, all the couple did was drink and mix drinks for others who like themselves had refused to evacuate. Zach on the other hand, served in Iraq to pay for his two kids with a previous wife. He was honorably discharged but suffered from PTSD. When he returned, he left his wife and went to New Orleans and met Addie. However, he was damaged and drank too much as well. Addies abusive behavior made him feel like a failure. And before dying he burned twenty-eight cigarette marks into his arm to represent his twenty-eight years of failures. Nonetheless, the aftermath of Hurrican Katrina brought them together and it wasn’t long before they fell in love.

Hurricane Katrina aftermath

Shortly after they moved into 826 N Rampart st. When Hurricane Katrina stuck, they refused to evacuate. Instead, they stayed behind feeding stray cats and mixing cocktails for others who refused to evacuate. Life was one big party for Zach and Addie after Katrina. In order to make sure that police officers would check in on them on a regular basis. Addie flashed her breasts at them every time they went by, to assure that they would come back for more. As a result, they were featured in the New York Times article during the Katrina aftermath. Eventually, they started doing cocaine and Addie started to accuse him of cheating. Which turned into fights and violent drunken arguements. On the day before the murder, Addie asked the landlord to remove Zach from the lease and he refused. What happened next, was slightly inevitable.

A gruesome murder

During one of their drunken violent arguements, on October 5, 2006 Zach strangled Addie. Then he took her lifeless body and performed necrophilia before cutting her up to pieces in the bathtub. Afterwards he took her head and put it on a pot on the oven. Both her arms and legs were placed in the oven and her torso was in the fridge. Some say they were seasoned, as if he was preparing to eat her. But others say the body parts were charred beyond recognition, however, the truth will probably always remain a mystery as Zach has taken his motives to the grave with him. Some believe he was trying to seperate the meat from the bone to hide evidence.

Zach’s final act

Immediately after Zach strangled Addie, he went back to his regular life routine. No one suspected anything as he continued to show up for work and run errands. Obviously he was starting to have issues at this point. And over the next few days, Zach spent $1,500 on strippers, food and drugs. Then on October 17, 2006 Zach Bowen went to the top of the Omni Hotel, had one final drink and jumped to his death. In his pocket, he had a note for police officers telling them where to find his girlfriend Addie. it read “I had to take my own life to pay for the one I took. If you send a patrol car to 826 N. Rampart, you will find the dismembered corpse of my girlfriend Addie in the oven, on the stove, and in the fridge and a full signed confession from myself … Zack Bowen. I scared myself not by the action of calmly strangling the woman I’ve loved for one and a half years … but by my entire lack of remorse,”
