Kissing alligators at the New Orleans Swamp Tours

I had a wonderful time learning about alligators in the New Orleans Swamp tours. For example, alligators were at one time an endangered species because people were over hunting them. Preservation efforts have brought their numbers back up so high that now efforts are to reduce their numbers again. That being said, make sure you try fried alligator during your trip.

Mashmallows

The only thing that I did not like about the tour is that the guides throw marshmallows at the wildlife to attract them. However, the amount of sugar contained in the marshmallow is horrible for their health. It’s important to note that alligators are Apex predators and mostly consume fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Sadly the reason they are attracted to marshmallows is that they look like eggs. Which are a part of their regular diet.

Note to self, kissing an alligator doesn’t turn him into a prince. But hey, at least I tried. I could have used a prince in my life. Besides, he was so cute, he deserved it and didn’t seem to mind. Although he probably would have prefered to take a bite out of me instead.

Why you should take a Swamp tour

With transportation to and from your hotel, the New Orleans Swamp tours are an absolute must see while in the French Quarter. Since these Bayous and swamps can only be experienced in Louisiana, you might as well go see them while you are here. On top of that, the swamps are full of wildlife. Such as alligators, racoons, toads, birds and more. Keep in mind that if you are visiting during the winter months, a lot of the animals will be hibernating.

Travel Secret

  • Since swamps are nesting grounds for mosquitoes, make sure to wear bug spray when you come here.
  • When the water freezes, the alligators go into brumation. Which is like hibernation, they bury themselves in the dirt and leave their noses sticking out so that they can breathe.
