Dermatas Gate Heraklion – Ancient Fortification Gate

Come see Dermatas Gate in Heraklion! It’s one of the last two preserved gates that remain from when the city was fortified against invaders. Sadly most of this gate was destroyed to build the seaside road of Heraklion, called Sof Venizelou but part of it is still visible today. Since it is located under the road, it is a little difficult to find.

When the city was fortified, they built gates to allow access into the city. Along with the Sabbionara gate, it is one of the last two preserved gates that remain from the fortifications. Initially, this used to be the backup entrance to the ancient city of Candia. Which is now Heraklion. You will see long tunnels that used to serve as a backup entrance to the city in case the main port backed up.

Is Dermatas Gate Heraklion Worth Seeing?

Of Course there is still plenty to see. Sadly most of this gate was destroyed to build the seaside road of Heraklion, called Sof Venizelou but part of it is still visible today. Don’t expect to spend a half day here. It’s more of a quick stop along your route. It is kind of hard to find since it is located under the road. Greece is a very clean country, you will rarely see any litter except for at this site. Unfortunately some people think it’s fun to throw trash behind locked gates so that others can’t pick it up. It’s extremely sad to see an old historic site that doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Please do not litter! Help keep the place clean for others.

Hours

Dermatas gate Heraklion is open year round 24 hours a day but I do not recommend visiting this site after dark. Since homeless people sometimes sleep here.  In other words, please make sure you visit this site during the day!

Located in Heraklion, Greece. To find it, go to Dermatas bay. Despite the fact that it is hard to find, it is definitely worth a visit. The Dermatas Gate is located between the Natural History museum and the Historical museum. Right in front of Dermatas bay, there is a roundabout.  In proximity to the south west side of the roundabout is the Dermatas gate, Heraklion.
