Come Visit The 1850 House In New Orleans

The 1850 house is a representation of an upper-middle-class family home during the most prosperous period in New Orleans. Being that it is decorated the way it would have looked like when it opened it’s doors in 1850. Visiting the 1850 house is like taking a trip through time.

What is the 1850s House?

The 1850s house is a great portrayal of the prosperity and good taste of the people in New Orleans during the late 1800s to early 1900s. As with all wealthy families during that period, the people who lived in this apartment would have had anywhere from three to eight slaves. An average of nine people would have lived in this dwelling at the same time. Slave quarters were not as glamorous as the middle-class family dwellings.

The Pontalba Buildings

The house sits inside the Pontalba buildings that line both sides of Jackson Square. Surprisingly it cost more than $300,000 dollars to build both buildings in the 1840s. They were built for Baroness Micaela Almonester Pontalba. The Pontalba buildings were once thought to be the first apartment building constructed in America. However, they were constructed as row houses and not rental apartments.  They were only turned into apartments in the 1930s. But they are still the oldest continuously rented apartments in the United States. Since the architecture is so beautiful, the site was turned into National Historic Landmark in 1974.
