The Wild West Ghost Town Museum is an amazing little restored Ghost town located in Colorado Springs. It’s a wonderful example of what life looked like during the Pikes peak or Bust period. There is nothing spooky or haunted here. But there are a lot of artifacts from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Including a two headed calf!
What makes this ghost town different that the others I have visited is that this one allows you to participate in a few hands on activities like comparing your shooting skills to those of heroes in the area such as Annie Oakley and Wild Bill. There is an old slot machine that can be played, win or lose it will dispense a souvenir coin. Also, you can crank an old butter churn, watch a short film on the mining era and even pan for gold! Gold panning is included with all admissions from May to September (weather permitting) The best part is that you can keep everything you find while gold panning. Maybe you will get lucky and strike gold!
Wild West Museum History
Golden cycle company built the building that now houses the Ghost town. The structure was built in 1899 by the Colorado Midland Railroad. As a maintenance building for steam locomotives that carried gold ore to the Golden Cycle Mill. When the gold rush died off the Golden Cycle company ended up closing it’s doors in 1949. Six years later in 1954, the Wild West Ghost Town Museum was created to preserve buildings from the pikes peak region. Including a bank, store, fire station. hotel, prison and more!
