What To Do Around Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best Things To Do Around Santa Fe

Have you always wanted to visit Santa Fe but you aren’t sure what to do when you get there? With about an hour drive to get to each location from Santa Fe. The following sites are all located slightly outside of Santa Fe, but they are all in the surrounding region. Let me know if I missed any.

Admire the ancient murals at Coronado Historic Site

Visit ancient Native American ruins from 1300 AD at the Coronado Historic site. Featuring beautifully painted murals inside a ceremonial kiva. Just fifty minutes south west of Santa Fe. Click here to see my post about it.

Explore Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument

Come check out the site where they filmed the series Earth 2. Hike through slots, cracks, canyons created by enormous tent rocks at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. It’s located about an hours drive from Santa Fe. You can read all about it by clicking here.

Spend a day at Bandelier National Monument

Explore Ancient Dwellings At Bandelier National Monument. Featuring a Ceremonial Cave And Kiva located 140 ft high in the Canyon Wall. It’s a long way up but the view from up there is absolutely amazing. Unlike a lot of cave dwellings, you can actually walk into some of these and get a real feel for life back in those days. Located about an hour outside of Santa Fe. Click here to read all about it.

Hike Santa Fe National Forest

With over one thousand miles of trails, the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest is a great place for a hike or simply to view nature and wildlife.

Walk around a 118 year old building at Hotel Castaneda

The Castaneda Hotel was built in 1898 to accommodate luxury travelers that came to the area.  Also the location where Fred Harvey started his very first track side restaurant. Offering quality food, before then, people were served stale meats and cold beans. The majestic hotel still stands as grandiose as it did back in the day. It now offers lodging, conventions and food service.

Decipher ancient drawings at Petroglyph National Monument

Petroglyph National Monument is home to one of the largest petroglyph concentration in America! This historic art collection carved in volcanic rocks, dates as far back as 1300 A.D. It is like a picture book on rocks that was carved by thousands of people over thousands of years. Located about an hour from Santa Fe, in Albuquerque. Click here to learn more.
