Best Things To Do In Santorini, Greece

1- Walk On An Active Volcano, Nea Kameni

Nea Kameni is the active volcano inside the Santorini Caldera. Since it is only accessible by boat, you will need a tour to get to the caldera.  Save some money by purchasing your tickets below. Because Santorini has one of the most beautiful sunsets on earth. I highly recommend the sunset cruise.  The best place to see the sunset is floating on a boat after visiting Nea Kameni. The sunset cruise includes dinner and unlimited drinks. Keep in mind that there is no shade whatsoever on Nea Kameni. Bring lots of water and wear plenty of sunscreen. Otherwise you will sunburn.

2- See The Most Picturesque Village In Greece, Oia

Other than being the home to dreamlike white buildings that line the Santorini caldera.  Oia is the best location on land to watch the beautiful Santorini sunset. On top of that, it’s gorgeous village with plenty of different places to eat or shop. Since it’s extremely beautiful, people come here for their wedding photos. You will always see a photo shoot in session somewhere in Oia. Obviously there will be a huge crowd in Oia at the time of the sunset. If you prefer visiting during quieter times.  Go early in the morning. Later in the afternoon is when the city starts to fill up with tourists.

3- Check Out A Medieval Castle, The Emborio Fortress

Cute site that is almost deserted. It’s a wonderful escape from all the other tourists on the island. The Emborio Fortress is a 15th century Medieval castle. It also features a beautiful church. The entire site is surrounded by maze like narrow streets that go in all directions. Getting lost is part of the fun because it only lasts a few minutes before you know where you are again. The Emborio Fortress is one of the best places to explore without crowds in Santorini.

4- Visit The Ancient City Of Atlantis, Akrotiri

Believed to be the ancient city of Atlantis. Akrotiri was completely destroyed during the Minoan eruption in 1646 BC. But somehow they managed to evacuate everyone before the city was destroyed. Since Akrotiri was entirely covered with Pumice from the eruption, it’s a well preserved site. Formally a beautiful sophisticated city with great knowledge and wealth. I love all the beautiful pottery, frescoes and ancient artifacts that this site contains. This site is a must see in Santorini!

5- Relax On Red Beach

Famous for it’s red hued volcanic sand and crystal clear waters.

6- Sip Greek Local Wine Surrounded By Wine Yards, Megalochori

Quaint little village surrounded by wine fields. All of the restaurants here will serve you local wine. Their white wine is some of the best I have ever had. It’s wonderful and pairs so well with fresh seafood.

7- Ride A Donkey Up The Caldera In Thira

Thira is the capital of Santorini. It offers a great view of Nea Kameni. Tight streets aligned with shops and restaurants make up most of Thira. You can walk down the side of the caldera all the way to the Aegean sea below. Or if you don’t want to walk, there are donkeys available to take you back up for a reasonable fee. Like most villages in Greece, Thira gets extremely crowded in the daytime. If you don’t like crowds, visit early in the morning or late in the evenings.
