The Black Hills of South Dakota hold so much history and they are a wonderful place to vist. Most people only know this area from Mount Rushmore but in reality there is a lot to see around here. An iconic image of the United States, Mount Rushmore features sixty feet sculptures of the heads of four famous United States presidents carved into the Black Hills of Keystone. Eventhough this is a quick site to visit, it’s worth the detour. However, the original design didn’t include presidents at all. Read my post about it here.
Not only does the Mammoth Site have the largest concentration of mammoths on earth. But it’s also the only location on earth to have both Columbian and Wolly mammoths. Over 1200 fossils have been found here including sixty one mammoths, llamas, camels, wolves, coyotes, fish, short faced bears and more. Click here to read more about it.
Crazy Horse, the biggest head sculpture on earth at 87 feet high. If it ver gts finished, this will be the largest sculpture on earth. Which was all started by one man with a bigger than life dream to carve Lakota hero Crazy Horse into the Black Hills. He slowly carved the mountain by himself until he died and his children took over. Read my post about it here.
Since the majority of Jewel Cave is covered with Calcite Crystals the entire cave shiny jewel like effect. As a result, the cave looks like a giant geode. Not to mention, it is also the third longest cave on earth. Read my post about it here.
With over fifty open door buildings to visit, the Four Mile Old West Town Museum is one of the last ghosts town left in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Read my post about it here.
