Back in 1906 the city started running pipes under the park to redistribute the hot mineral water. In order to prevent the pipes from blowing up from all the pressure created by the hot water. They built a vent to allow the hot water to escape. It was originally a pipe surrounded by bricks in the formation of a teepee.
As the water flows over the structure it cools and deposits layer upon layer of travertine. Under those circumstances, this tepee has turned into a giant mass of minerals. And it continues to grow at a rate of one to two inches a year. Tepee fountain is already massive. However it’s really not that old. It’s too bad I won’t be around to see what it looks like 100 years from now.
