Mykonos Island – Greece
Mykonos was named after the son or grandson of the god Apollo and a local hero. The island is said to be the location where the great battle between Zeus and the Titans took place. Hercules is believed to have killed the invincible giants by luring them here, away from their protection of Mount Olympus. Without their protection the giants became vincible and Hercules was able to kill them off. The large rocks all over Mykonos island are said to be the testicles of these petrified giants.
Mykonos is known as the island of the winds and they aren’t kidding. It’s constantly windy here, which feels really nice in the summer months because the sun get scorching hot. Located in the Aegean sea, Mykonos is part of the Cyclades. It sits between Tinos, Paros and Naxos. Mykonos is easily accessible by ferry from Piraeus in Athens. It’s a relatively small island, with only 84 sq km ( 33 sq miles) Most of the attractions are concentrated in the main city Mykonos town, better known as Chora. It’s dreamlike. Everything here looks picture perfect.
Mykonos is best known for it’s night life, there are a lot of establishments for the LGBT community. People come here to party and they can get very loud. The hotels are not insulated for sound. It’s hard to get a good nights sleep. If you are not here for the nightlife, like me, look for a hotel that is located on the outskirts of town near one of the smaller bays. It will be quieter and you will have a better chance of enjoying your stay. If you want nightlife, stay in Chora or at one of the Super Paradise Resorts.
Mykonos is a really beautiful island but the amount of tourists make it almost unbearable. I visited in September when the tourism season is dying down and there was still a ton of people everywhere. The island is not built to accommodate that many people. The roads are way too narrow, they are barely wide enough for one mini or smart car yet it’s a two way road with a lot of tourists wandering around in ATV’s, motorcycles and rented cars.

Windmills
The Mykonos windmills are lined along the hillside overlooking the sea in Chora. They harness the strong northern winds. They are called Kato Mili in Greek. They were built by the Venetians in the 16th century. They have since been converted into homes. They are a beautiful site to see!
Legend Of the Wells
Back in the day, girls were only allowed to marry if they had drunk water from all three wells.
Now a days, the wells serve as a backup water source for the city. Anyone who needs water can come get water from these wells.
Travel Secrets
Mykonos is home to Pietro (Peter) the Pelican. He is over 100 years old and resides near the chapel in front of the windmills. Sadly I did not see him during my visit but hopefully you will.
The beautiful cobble streets are actually just painted on the ground.

How to get here
There are a few ways to get to Mykonos. You can fly here or take a ferry from Athens or any one of the other Greek islands.
Accommodations
There are plenty of hotels all over Mykonos island. If you are looking for nightlife, you should stay in Chora or at one of the Super Paradise Beach resorts.
If you are not into nightlife and want a quieter experience, stay in a hotel by one of the bays so that you have a quieter beach close to your hotel.
