What once started as a summer camp for orphan girls, The Mother Cabrini Shrine is now a beautiful pilgrimage site. Including a nature walk and a 373-step staircase used by pilgrims. Also featuring a twenty-two feet (6.7 m) statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. My favorite part of this site were the gorgeous stained glass windows that adorn all the walls of the church. With all their beautiful colors, they are impressive to see.
From Summer Camp To Shrine
In 1902 she bought farmland on the side of Lookout mountain. Which consisted of two barn and a springhouse. Unfortunately they had no reliable source of water. So water had to be hauled up from the stream in Mount Vernon Canyon. This continued until 1912 when a well was discovered on the land.
She founded the Sisters of the Sacred Heart and used the land to start a small farming operation. Which she used as a summer camp for the Queen of Heaven Orphanage. Orphan girls were sent to the camp to perform farm chores and enjoy the outdoors. Once the well was discovered in 1912, a stone house was built to house the orphan girls. The summer camp operated until 1967. Following Mother Cabrini’s beatification in 1938, the area became a pilgrimage site. And when she was canonized in 1946, it became the Mother Cabrini Shrine, it is today.
