The museum covers 5,500 years of Minoan history from the Neolithic period to Roman times. You will see some of the most beautiful frescoes that you have ever seen as well as an unbelievable amount of Minoan artwork such as jewelry, pottery and weapons used during the Minoan empire. It’s truly amazing to see how advanced the Minoans were for their time. It’s too bad they are no longer around to share their knowledge.
The expression “grabbing the bull by the horns” originated from the Minoan civilization. It started because young Minoans had to participate in bull jumping as right of passage into adulthood. The principle was: A girl would hold a bull by the horns while a guy would leap over the bull.
The site was built on top of a Venetian Monastery which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856. In other words, make sure you visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum garden to see it! It’s worth the detour.
In order to see as much of the Minoan civilizations as possible in Greece. You will have to take the special ticket and visit Knossos Palace as well. The special ticket will save you some money on the entrance fees to both sites. It is valid for three days so you do not have to visit both sites on the same day if you don’t want to. I recommend taking a tour to visit Knossos Palace. Getting out there is not easy and parking is horrible. You are better off taking a tour to get there because it will also allow you to skip the incredibly long line to enter the site.
