Over 8,000 gallons of water a day flow over the colorful terraces at Hot Springs State Park. There is a lot of beautifully colored microbes that cover the terraces along with layers upon layers of minerals. As you walk along the terraces, you will feel the heat radiating from the water below.
The terrace trail leads to a suspension footbridge that crosses the Big Horn River. It provides a great view of the colorful terraces. Originally built in 1916 but it was deemed unsafe in the 1980s and condemned. Then in 1992, it was restored to what we see today. This swinging bridge is the longest of it’s kind in Wyoming.
Built-in 1906. It was originally a pipe surrounded by bricks in the formation of a tepee. As the water flows over the structure it cools and deposits layer upon layer of travertine. Under those circumstances, Tepee Fountain has turned into a giant mass of minerals. And it continues to grow at a rate of one to two inches a year.
There is a free bathhouse in Hot Springs State Park. You can soak in the spring water which is kept at about 104 degrees. There are two pools available. An indoor one and an outdoor one. You can soak for periods up to twenty minutes at a time. Any longer is not recommended as it can elevate your heartbeat too high. If you feel tired or nauseated, get out immediately. Hot Springs State Park has the central herd of bison in Wyoming state parks. You can drive inside the preservation to see them. If you get the chance, visit in the spring, as I did. Not only will you see the heard but you will also get to see their new calves. To be honest, they look a whole lot like baby cows. They are adorable.Do not get out of your vehicle to view the Bison. They can be extremely dangerous, unpredictable animals.
