Hermann-Grima House

American Horror Story: Coven filmed at the Hermann-Grima House

Not only is the Hermann-Grima House home to the only 1830’s stable and open-hearth kitchen in the French Quarter but it’s also where they filmed the interior shots of Madame Lalaurie’s mansion for American Horror Story’s Coven series. One of the few buildings in the French Quarter that was built with a federalist architecture facade. With urban slave quarters, a beautiful courtyard and completely furnished with period pieces, the museum is a wonderful site to visit. And I highly recommend visiting in November or around a holiday because the themes change to match the seasons.

Why is it called the Hermann-Grima house?

Originally it was built for Samuel Hermann and his family, in 1831. But they didn’t live there very long because Hermann lost the house in 1844. When they built the house, he had mortgages and stocks in the cotton industry and they were doing very well. Until the cotton market crashed in 1837 and caused a worldwide financial panic. Which caused him to lose all of his fortunes and by 1844 he was bankrupt. So Hermann sold the house to his lawyer Felix Grimma. Who lived in the house with his unmarried sister, widowed mother wife, nine kids, and slaves. Most of what you will see here belonged to the Grima family. Including over two thousand books, portraits, furniture and more. Since the Hermann-Grima house was used by the National Federation of Woman’s Exchanges the upper portion of the house features decor and artifacts from that era.

Travel Secrets

November Death And mourning Traditions
  • During November, to celebrate the passing of Madam Marie Grima who died in 1850 on October 15th, the museum focuses on old mourning traditions. Not only do they have a casket inside the museum but they also explain the rituals and traditions used in that era.
  • For example, widows could only wear black without silk or taffeta. Most of all, the fabric could not reflect light. For women, the mourning period lasted eighteen months and for men, it was six months.
