Four Mile Old West Town Museum is one of the few ghosts town left in the Black Hills. Located only a few miles west of Custer, it’s definitely worth a stop while you are in the area. Since I love history, I absolutely love visiting ghost towns because I can imagine what life would have been like back in the days. Notably, this site has fifty open door buildings that you can walk in. Which is amazing for such a small town. Most of the other ghost towns that I have visited did not have half as many building as this one. For this reason, I highly recommend visiting this one.
Why is it called Four Mile Old West Town?
Back in the day, towns weren’t always assigned a name. Instead small towns were assigned a number. Which made it easier for stagecoaches to go to the correct location. Four Mile Old West Town is located four miles west of Custer, which is how it got it’s name as the Four Mile Town. Now a days, the Four Mile Old West Town is a recreation of the town that used to be located here. Such as saloon, town hall, jail, bar, laundromat, photography studio and more! On top of that, this town offers hilarious reenactments of daily events around the old west towns. Make sure you check it out when you visit the Black Hills.
