Flight Delay Compensation
You may be entitled to up to $700 in flight delay compensation if you had a flight delayed or cancelled within the last 3 years. Even if it didn’t cause you to miss a connection and you were just late getting home or to your destination. You are still entitled to compensation. United States
Overbooked flights in the USA are also covered which is why airlines offer incentives for you to volunteer to get off the flight. When you volunteer, you lose your rights. If you did not volunteer and you were bumped off the flight, because it was overbooked, you have the right to file for compensation. This compensation can go up to $1350! I do not recommend ever accepting a voucher for a delayed or cancelled flight. You are entitled to cash and that is much better than any voucher!
Europe
If you traveled to or within Europe and your flight was cancelled or delayed, you have more rights than in North America. Since overbooking a flight is common practice in North America and it is not allowed in Europe your compensation will be even greater!
I do not recommend ever accepting a voucher for a delayed or cancelled flight unless you can’t resist the offer. You are entitled to cash and that is much better than any voucher. Also, you can use cash anywhere, whereas the vouchers are extremely limited.

Why does my delayed flight entitle me for compensation?
The 2003 Montreal Convention protects you from flight delays, cancellations and boarding denials in all other countries besides Europe. It also covers your luggage in case it is lost, damaged or delayed. If you incurred extra costs for a hotel room or transportation, keep your receipts to file for reimbursement under this act.
In Europe Law EC 261 requires airlines to compensate passengers for long flight delays, cancellations, and denied boarding situations. Therefore all passengers on EU flights that are eligible under EC 261 must be paid up to 600 € in compensation for flight delays of more than three hours!
How is flight delay calculated?
It is based off your arrival time. If you land three hours later than expected, you have a three hour flight delay. Now just because your flight was late to get off the ground, it doesn’t mean the landing will be delayed. Most airlines can make up lost time while flying. Flight delay is based off the time you were supposed to land.
AM I eligible for Flight Delay Compensation if I was delayed on a business trip?
Yes! The compensation for a delayed flight applies only to the person taking the flight and not the one who paid for it. So if your business trip was delayed, you should claim flight delay compensation for it.
