Emborio Fortress
Emborio is a Travel Secret! It’s one of the few places in Santorini where you probably won’t see any other tourists. It’s a nice break from all the crowds and a great place to get a real look at Greek life and a medieval castle. The village is extremely peaceful and feels almost deserted compared to the rest of Santorini.
A little bit of History
This medieval fortress was built in 1831. Emborio is spelled many different ways, such as Emporio and Emporeio. The village is also known as Nimborios. No matter which way you decide to spell it, the name means “trade” in Greek. The village used to be the center for trade in the area back in the 15th century.
The site can be a little difficult to find. It’s very easy to get lost in the narrow winding streets that feel like a maze. The fortress overlooks the village. The locals have tried to make it a little easier to find by painting directions on the walls. Look for directions like this as you travel through the beautiful streets adorned with gorgeous colorful doors.
Hours
Emborio is a village so it’s open all day, year round. I don’t recommend visiting this site after dark as there are a lot of unlit areas. You will not be able to purchase anything on site. Only the locals live here, and there aren’t any stores of restaurants on the fortress site. There are a few shops in the town a few streets away.
Be sure to wear good walking shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable clothes. Bring lots of water, in bottles or a good hydration pack and a camera. You will not be able to purchase anything on site.
Accommodations
There aren’t really any accommodations in Emborio but Santorini Island is very small and there are accommodations all over Santorini. It’s an easy day trip from anywhere on the island. You can book your hotel below. My link will search through all the online sites to find you the best prices. This site will earn a small commission on your purchase.
