Larger than life Denver Public Art

With one percent of the capital construction funds invested in local art, Denver public art is among the finest in the USA. Many of them are larger than life. Since there are more than sixty statues, sculptures, murals, I can’t show them all but here are some of the more memorable ones.

“I see what you mean” by Lawrence Argent

Giant 40 foot blue bear that is peeking into the convention center. Sadly the creator died on October 4, 2017, following a liposuction procedure. When it was built in 2005, it was named “I See What You Mean,” but everyone just calls it the Big Blue Bear. Over the years, the Big Blue Bear has become an iconic image of Denver and has been featured in film and tv.

Big Sweep by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen

In front of the Denver Art Museum. When artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen saw city workers brooming up garbage to keep the city clean, they were inspired. As a result, they built a jumbo-sized broom that sweeps enormous scraps of paper into a giant blue dustpan.

Two giant white figures dance in front of the performing arts complex. On the corner of Speer Blvd and Arapahoe St.

Scottish Angus cow and calf by Dan Ostermiller

Behind the museum, a lying mama cow rests in the grass alongside her calf. On 12th ave and Bannock St.

Lao Tzu by Mark di Suvero

At the Acoma Plaza on 13th ave. Between the library and museum, is a huge reddish-orange steel sculpture with interesting angles.

Pony on a Chair by Donald Lipski

Located on the corner of W 14th ave and Acoma Plaza. Above a giant 21 ft, high red chair stands a beautiful average-sized pony overlooking the city.

Denver true by Larry Kirkland

At the Webb building lobby on 14th st & Colfax, stands a giant face with a plumb bob. In other words, an architect’s tool hangs over granite etches blueprints of the city.

Man & Woman by Fernando Botero

Near the Temple Buell Theatre, stand a plump bronze couple. At the DPCA Galleria – on 13th ave and Curtis.

On the War Trail and Bronco Buster by Alexander Phimister Proctor

In Civic Center Park, between Broadway, Bannock, Colfax & W 14th ave. Two statues, one of an American Indian Warrior the other is a Bronc-Ridding Cowboy.
