Getting swollen feet on a flight happens to a lot of us but luckily, there are ways to prevent it. And best of all, it’s an easy solution. All you need to do is wear a pair of compression socks when you fly. Not only will they improve the blood circulation in your feet, and legs but they will also prevent swelling. To be honest, compression socks should be on everyone’s feet when they travel.

First of all, legs are not meant to be immobile for long periods of time, like on a flight. When they are immobile, the blood doesn’t circulate properly. Since legs are long limbs, blood has a long way to go uphill before it can reach the heart. If the blood can’t make it back to the heart, it will start to pool in the veins. Resulting in swollen, achy feet. However, that’s not the only problem, when blood pools it eventually becomes a blood clot. Otherwise known as Deep Vein Thrombosis. Which is basically a blood clot in a deep vein such as in the legs.
How do they work?
Compression sock apply a small amount of pressure to the lower legs. As a result, the arteries are able to relax and oxygen-rich blood flows more freely to the muscles. Afterward, the veins get a full flow of blood back to the heart. Also, the socks help squeeze the blood uphill in the veins. Since the blood is constantly moving, it can’t pool and cause a clot. With this improved blood flow, feet don’t get swollen or sore. As an added bonus, they may even stop you from getting lightheaded when you stand up too quickly.
What does it feel like to wear them?
Most of the compression will be felt around the ankle and the compression will reduce as the sock goes up the leg. Overall, they should feel snug but not tight. If they are squeezing you any more than a gentle hug, they are too small. In other words, it will feel comfortable, like a snug sock.
